Special Diabetes
This product provides quality control material for plasma tests for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, as opposed to HbA1c which is a whole blood test. Fructosamine is analogous to, and is formed by the same chemistry as, glycated hemoglobin. However, since it represents glycated plasma proteins instead of hemoglobin, is not subject to many of the limitations that the HbA1c test is. Unlike HbA1c, fructosamine is not affected by conditions which alter the lifetime of red blood cells, nor is it interfered with by any abnormalities in the hemoglobin molecule that can interfere with some glycated hemoglobin tests. Fructosamine also gives a more recent snapshot of the patient’s glycemic control, looking at that of the last 2-3 weeks as opposed to HbA1c which represents a patient’s glycemic control over the last 8-12 weeks.

Insulin and C-Peptide can be used to distinguish type I versus type II diabetes. These proteins are produced from the same proinsulin molecule, and are thus produced in a 1:1 ratio. However serum insulin may be obscured by auto-antibodies or levels significantly increased due to insulin therapy. The C-Peptide test provides a way to measure the patient’s natural production of insulin.
